Many education scholars like John Dewey think the School as Social Centre. Why do some people call the school as a social centre?

Well. Campus Career Club explored some empirical facts in this regard. First of all, a school really represents the entire society as a whole. School not only reflect the ideals of society but also performs the most than any other social institutions. John Dewey in 1902 called the school as the social centre.

People make his first step in acquiring knowledge outside the home into a social institution mostly in school. It is the supreme superstructure in society. Nowadays, it is the most concentred formal agency of education. As days change, it advanced with specific goals. It has been developing in pursuit of education.

At the same time, it does a lot of essential functions. For Example, social interaction, socialization, cultural transmission, social networking, social responsibility etc. Therefore, we call the school the social centre.

The Social Centre

The School functions as the social centre in society. It represents leading social values, rules, norms & ideas. This socializes the students accordingly to capture future leadership. Moreover, it provides a common platform for social interaction that teaches us how to live in society.

This performs both as a learning centre & a place for social interaction among the members of the society. By maintaining the balance an ideal school can contribute profoundly to society. It makes ready future generation for the country significantly.

Social Centre of Socialization

Socialization refers to the lifelong process of acquiring knowledge of social values, rules, and laws, norms, social skills. Individuals become able to acquire a personal identity with interaction with others. The School plays a vital role to socialize students and act as the social centre which we may call the centre of socialization.

Students learn the academic curriculum prepared by teachers and school administrations. They also learn how to adjust with social rules to grow as expected individuals for society. It teaches how to avoid punishment by reducing undesirable behaviours like offensive language.

Students figure out that to be successful socially. They must learn to be polite, gentle, and quiet, to wait, to act interested even when they are not. They try to please teachers making the relationship with peers. So, it performs as the social centre.

Social Centre for Social Relationships

From nursery to secondary education, almost 12 years of childhood age students pass in school. During this long course of time, they come close to one another, make friendship and family to family relationship. They build up social networking.

Students in a classroom come from different families, economic and social background in which a lot of dissimilarities may exist. While they do interact with each other in a classroom, they come to know cultural standards. Moreover, on the basis of school, parents also interact with the people of society.

Social interaction is one of the best ways of building the social relationship that school makes easy. Consequently, the school acts as a social centre.

Cultural Transmission

The school performs another crucial function to transmit the cultural norms and values to our future generation. It provides a ground for the students to cope up with a diverse population into one single society with a shared national identity. It prepares the next generations for their citizenship roles. Mostly, students are taught about the country’s laws & our political ideals by learning civic lessons.

In addition to they learn patriotism through rituals such as saluting the national flag. Students must also learn the pledge of allegiance & the national history and tradition, the stories of the nation’s heroism and exploits. They learn our cultural behaviours and do the best practices of our national culture in school.

Individual Development

The school helps in the complete development of a student. Various activities of it poll out the latent potentialities of the children. And nurture them in a proper way. It cultivates higher values in students, for instance, truth, sympathy, care, love, cooperation etc.

Functions of School as a Social Centre
